Chapter 14 – Crash course to death—literally
The deployment of novice pilots, trained with irresponsible haste and sent to their slaughter against an enemy far superior in number, with specific reference to the events of 21st November 1944.
Even if the pilots were fighting politically on the side of a criminal dictatorship, in 1944 they were primarily fighting for their homeland and against its systematic destruction. Courage and bravery are virtues worth recognising even if the political background is not. From today’s perspective, this is often overlooked. Many of the young but highly motivated German pilots, who were now only imperfectly trained due to fuel shortages and a lack of experienced flying instructors, were initially hopelessly out of their depth in the brutal air battles that awaited them. They often did not even survive the first combat mission. Others surpassed themselves. Judging this is difficult for anyone who has not experienced it for himself.
